I&rsquo;m assuming the singer knows these recordings inside out, so matching those details is an easy way to show I take the gig seriously.</span></li><li><span><strong>Playing along with recordings.</strong> I practiced with the tracks, focusing on matching the drummer&rsquo;s bounce and feel.</span></li><li><span><strong>Dialing in the specialty grooves and solos.</strong> I spent extra time on the trickier sections&mdash;slow practice, relistening, and isolating the drum solos. I&rsquo;ll revisit those again tomorrow, but otherwise I&rsquo;m feeling solid.</span></li><li><span><strong>Preparing gear.</strong> I&rsquo;ve made a list of what I need and packed my metronomes.</span></li></ol>What gives me confidence<ol><li><span>I know the music.</span></li><li><span>I trust that my skills are up to the task.</span></li><li><span>I&rsquo;ve put in the practice. The singer won&rsquo;t know that, so the impression of my musicianship will likely exceed what they expect.</span></li><li><span>I&rsquo;m not shy. Hutzpah matters. Second is practicing without dynamics, with the idea, &ldquo;I&rsquo;ll add those later after I&rsquo;ve got the notes,&rdquo; means you must learn the darn piece twice. In performance I&rsquo;ll bet you&rsquo;ll play version 1.<br /><br />&ldquo;Which pathway am I reinforcing by how I&rsquo;m practicing?&rdquo; Molly Gebrian, Learn Faster, Perform Better. Good question. For example, do you skip over the &ldquo;boring bits&rdquo; to get to the good bits? This is self defeating. I&rsquo;ve learned that the &ldquo;boring bits&rdquo; are the essential bits. So, I dive in with gusto.<br /><br />Question to consider. How is your posture? No electronic distractions, just you and the task before you. If it works, you did it. If it fails, you own it. Either way valuable life skills are developed or reinforced.&nbsp;<br />4. I tell my students that I practice slowly because I'm in a hurry. That way I don't waste precious practice time redoing and repairing incompetent work.&nbsp;</li><li>Use the metronome on smallest note value. This will help you maintain a slow practice tempo. I would the click on the 8th note for the above piece. The next page&nbsp;has an 8th note accompaniment.&nbsp;</li><li>Recording&nbsp;and listening to yourself&nbsp;will tell you the truth. The truth will focus your efforts. With the recording you can&nbsp;check your&nbsp;accuracy and interpretation.&nbsp;I'm sympathetic to the fears of some students, but I gently encourage them to start small by recording themselves playing a scale.&nbsp;</li><li>Practice the dynamics on the 1st reading. That would make no sense if your goal is to converse, at some level, with a native speaker.</em>&rdquo;<br /><br />Currently, my ear training, at the keyboard, encompasses blues tunes, (see my previous blog), big band drumming, and listening and analysis of Classical string quartets performances.&nbsp;<br /><br /><strong>Blues:</strong><br />I figure out the form, chord progressions, the keyboard groove, and important keyboard licks. I may or may not write them down.<br /><br /><strong>Big band drumming:</strong><br />I'm transcribing drum fills and set ups, as well as orchestration on the drum kit.&nbsp;<br /><br /><strong>Classical string quartets performances:</strong><br />I'm listening and noting how the music is phrased. For example, the relationship between melodic direction and dynamics. I'm particularly interested in phrase ending and tempo fluctuations.&nbsp;<br /><br /><strong>For beginners, where would you start?</strong><br />If you are a classical piano student, start practising the ear training and completing the theory assigned to your level.&nbsp;<br /><br /><strong>If you are a jazz student?</strong><br />Copy the melodies of jazz standards. Master musicians modify what you see in the fakebook. You want to internalise their interpreations. How does one do this if it is not immediately or intuitively easy? Listen to the track repeatedly. Renowned teacher Ed Soph said, "one hundred times." Herbie Hancock recounts that as a kid he listened to an Oscar Peterson track 100 times before he was able to work it out. He also said that the next transcription only took 99 times. In my experience, students give up too soon or attempt melodies that are too difficult.&nbsp;<br /><br />Starter tunes:<br />1. Teaching piano all day isn&rsquo;t conducive to keeping professional-level chops.</li><li>I&rsquo;m watching YouTube videos on blues organ technique to learn about drawbars, the volume pedal, and Leslie speaker effects. Blues piano and I are old friends; authentic blues organ playing, not so much.</li><li>I listen to a lot of blues recordings.</li><li>I focus on learning &ldquo;feel&rdquo; before virtuosity&mdash;feel wins every time.</li><li>I&rsquo;m learning <em>Green Onions</em> using a combination of score and ear. So far, it&rsquo;s the only piece I&rsquo;m reading.</li><li>I&rsquo;m doing this for fun.</li><li>I bought a portable keyboard that (1) fits in a backpack and (2) has the necessary sounds for this project.</li></ol><br />&#8203;If I were a jazz student, I&rsquo;d follow the same method&mdash;with one caveat: I&rsquo;d make sure my piano skills were up to the task. (It did.)</li></ol></li><li>I knew the scope of the jazz field from my 50-year career as a professional musician and educator.<ol><li>My 1st experience hearing,&nbsp;as a first-year student at Berklee ,&nbsp;Hendrik Meurkens play be-bop vibraphone and continued with my discovery of Gary Burton, a Berklee educator inspired me.</li></ol></li><li>I knew the repertoire from playing the piano.</li><li>I knew the harmonic material that I would need to master.<ol><li>Scales</li><li>Chord voicings, inversions, substitutions etc.</li><li>Arpeggios</li><li>Licks</li></ol></li><li>I knew that to succeed I would need to always practice musically. I would not make the beginner mistake of &ldquo;learning the piece&rdquo; and then adding the expression.</li><li>I used a metronome in practice.</li><li>I video taped and/or recorded all my practices so that I could evaluate my progress.</li><li>I found groups to play with.</li><li>I learned how to hold the four mallets watching Gary Burton on YouTube.</li><li>I practiced regularly and I practiced a lot.</li><li>When I got the Malletkat I modified it to play more musically.</li><li>I had a couple of lessons with Rick Dior who seconded all the steps above.</li><li>I listen to jazz mallet players. The big question behind it all: <em>Do the practice techniques and curriculum I teach actually work?&nbsp;</em>Let&rsquo;s find out.<br />&#128736;&#65039; Starting PointBefore I ever touched the MalletKAT, I had already taught myself elementary xylophone. You can hear those early efforts here on my YouTube Channel: <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HL9VA1EVMeM&amp;list=PLfu5XKCRVDphFZ-31u-rbzLwZ6OxJZYc4" target="_blank"><em>Early Jazz</em>.</a> Also worth noting&mdash;I wasn&rsquo;t starting from scratch. I&rsquo;ve played and taught the music I was hired to perform for decades on the piano. That foundation made a huge difference.<br />&#127919; The Process I Followed<ul><li><strong>Lessons with Rick Dior</strong> I took a few mallet lessons with Rick, who showed me a proper grip, rootless voicings, and recommended graded repertoire&mdash;both jazz and classical. I shedded it until I knew it inside and out. In other words, I did the work. He also encouraged me to expand my harmonic and solo vocabulary (more on that in a future post).</li><li><strong>Listening &amp; Research</strong> I studied jazz mallet players like David Pike, Gary Burton, Lionel Hampton, Milt Jackson, and others. I paid close attention to their phrasing, pedaling, and overall approach.</li><li><strong>Jazz Mechanics</strong> I worked through the jazz warm-up I outlined in my 1-page PDF (you can download it here).<ul><li>12 major scales + selected bebop scales</li><li>60 jazz chords: solid for comping, broken for soloing</li><li>24 rootless ii&ndash;V&ndash;I progressions in major and minor</li><li>Minor blues scales in A, D, C, F, Bb, Eb</li><li>Guide tones (3rds and 7ths) through various progressions</li></ul></li><li><strong>Technical Work</strong> I played a ton of exercises to develop hand-eye coordination. It wasn&rsquo;t a chore&mdash;it was a thrill to hear my expressive abilities grow and begin to mask my technical limitations.</li><li><strong>Visual Learning</strong> I watched YouTube videos of vibraphone performances. (You&rsquo;ll find links to my favorites in earlier blog posts.)</li><li><strong>Tune Practice: The Bill McBirnie Method</strong> I practiced tunes by playing along with professional recordings. Bill&rsquo;s method is simple: pick a tune, load up several YouTube versions, and spend the afternoon playing along&mdash;transposing as needed. I also used software to drill chord progression patterns from Step 4.</li><li><strong>Expressive Playing</strong> I focused on phrasing and musicality, even within the limits of my technique.
