Gerald Klickstein reminds us why we play, how to play with more joy, and get on with it. His blog, book, and website is filled with valuable information for musicians of all levels.

if you are struggling this week, may I suggest you wander over to his website.

It’s going to happen, life will get in the way: work, health, spouse, kids, parents, Netflix… You name it, it will happen.

What to do?

My best response?
  1. Have great habits and congruent goals, both personal and professional. Bring in all the stakeholders and get them onside. Practicing for a musician is like training for an athlete. It is no trivial matter. Everyone has to be on board.
  2. Plan your life, making room for practice. Try a time audit for a week. Write down every hour what you were doing? I bet we can all find some time wasters. Add them up and presto a few extra hours a week open up.
  3. Go to a concert. It might energize your commitment. Local pub or concert hall, I don’t think it matters much. Just get out there.
  4. Go to a jam session or masterclass once in a while. You will meet other adults working on the same dreams. This is one of many reasons why I and my drum sticks go to Jazz Camp every summer. Fellowship!

Cheers,
David Story
